Here is what happened – the researcher was a research at the college, helping a professor do experiments in pharmacology. In February, the professor put down three bottles of a cancer research compound known as C-25, on his desk. Later, he noted that they were not on his desk. He then reported them stolen.
The day after, a security video showed Zhao going into the office and leaving a few minutes later. No one else was seen in the video going in the office. Security then questioned the researcher, but he did not admit OR deny taking the compound. He said that he could not understand what was being asked, and no matter what, the issue would be solved in 10 days.
The public safety manager at the university then contacted the FBI. She noted that Zhao had gotten in hot water in 2012 for putting lab data on his personal laptop. Also, college staff discovered that Zhao claimed on a research website that he had discovered a new compound that fights cancer, and that he wanted to bring the wonder compound back to China with him.
Reports indicate that the professor works in mitochondrial apoptosis, but there is not much out there online regarding the C-25 compound in question.
This is a rather strange crime. People have been known to steal compounds, but usually it is regarding taken it from an industrial lab to advance a career, not a path to instant wealth as in this case.
