We always hear about consolidation in the drug industry, as well as many stories about layoffs that are coming. But some pharmaceutical companies are still hiring. Of course, priorities do shift as projects in the industry change, so it does mean that some drugmakers are looking for good people to hire. But where are we seeing the most hiring activity?
Genetic Engineering and Biology News recently surveyed the websites of some of the largest pharmaceutical companies. It noted that there were thousands of jobs that sill need to be filled in many countries, as of June 2013. The magazine noted the total number of pharmaceutical job openings in the world, the total jobs that are open in a country, and the percentage of jobs accounted for in each country, among other interesting facts.
According to this survey, the company with the most openings right now is Novartis, which in June was trying to fill 2740 positions around the world. About 1100 are in the United States. This means that America accounts for around 40% of the total openings at Novartis. The other nations with a lot of unfilled jobs include Germany, Switzerland, UK, Germany, Austria and India.
Other drugmakers with a lot of openings around the world include:
- Roche
- Sanofi Aventis
- Pfizer
- GSK
- Johnson & Johnson
- AbbVie
- Astrazeneca
- Eli Lilly
- Bristol Myers Squibb – 367 openings
Interestingly, Merck was not on this list. That company has been shedding a lot of jobs and is in the process of overhauling its R&D and manufacturing operations.
